Become a Proofreader
There are more proofreading jobs online now than ever before, largely due to the growing number of sites on the web. Errors can be found everywhere and busy writers don't always have time to go back and proof their work before they submit it. Because of this (and the abundance of writing that is out there) proofreaders are in fairly high demand.
If you want to become a proofreader there are some skill sets you must have in order to be considered for positions. First of all, you must have excellent English grammar and spelling skills. You will probably be more successful if you have some educational background in English, but depending on the employer, this is not an absolute requirement.
If you are interested in becoming a proofreader but you're not sure whether you have the appropriate skill set to be successful at it, you might want to consider taking some courses in English. You can find these online or at your local community college and many of them are very reasonably priced.
You should understand the monetary rewards of being a proofreader before you become too involved in getting into this career. Except for a few very lucky souls, proofreading does not generally pay a lot of money. In the editorial world these jobs are certainly on the low rung of the power ladder, so don't go into this type of job or career with unrealistic expectations. On a more positive note, however, you can go into it with the knowledge that you might be one of the lucky ones and earn a very respectable income for your efforts.
There are some websites you can register on to try to get proofreading jobs, but you should be very careful that you investigate sites thoroughly before signing up on them. The reason for this is that there are so many scams out there. Many sites are built for the sole purpose of trying to take your money. They are not interested in helping you find a job or make money. So, how are you supposed to know the difference? One of the biggest things to look out for is fees. If a site wants any type of fee (regardless of what they say it is for), then you should just walk away. Never pay someone a fee to find a job.
Be proactive and learn about the various opportunities in the world of proofreading. Many editorial jobs are available as work from home or freelance positions now, so it certainly isn't necessary for you to live in a large city where publishing houses are located. Do some online research about the different organizations that offer networking opportunities and/or job searches for editorial professionals. This can be a great way for you to find out about opportunities and possibly land a job.
You must also keep up with current issues and concerns that proofreaders and editors have. This is simply a smart thing for you to do if you are serious about becoming a proofreader. Try thinking of it this way; the more professional connections you have the more likely it will be that you will find a decent freelance or regular job as a proofreader. Unless you have the educational background and work skills to get your foot in the door, obtaining a proofreading job can be quite difficult; but it is not impossible.
Start with the usual supsects of Elance.com and Guru.com to find some proofreading work. After you've tried your hand at it, call local publishers and see if there are any openings. You might have to
take on a bit of volunteer work to build up references and experience, but even a month of volunteering will be enough.
