How to Open a Daycare
Opening a daycare can be a very smart business move,
particularly in today's economy. More households are two income instead of one,
and there are also more single parents who must work full-time to meet their
obligations. With fewer parents able to stay home with their young children,
the demand for quality daycare centers continues to increase.
Understanding the Regulations
The rules and regulations that go along with operating a daycare center will
vary quite a bit depending on what state you live in. In order to operate a
profitable business you should plan on opening a daycare facility that is
capable of handling at least 150 children. Traditionally, daycare centers that
cannot hold this many children do not produce annual profits and wind up only breaking even.
You will need to meet both state and federal regulations in order to operate
a daycare center. Be prepared to spend a great deal of time conducting research
to find out exactly what you need to do. It will be much better for you to spend
the time doing this before you open your doors for business so that you can avoid
being fined or having your license suspended.
Obtaining Financing
If you don't happen to have several hundred thousand dollars on hand to invest in
start up costs, you might consider starting your business on a smaller scale.
You could begin by opening an official babysitting business, which can be
operated out of your home. From there, you might choose to move your location
to a local church or civic organization. You want to choose an institution that
has the space to spare and you also want that institution to have a spotless reputation.
If you are in a good financial position you might be able to obtain financing to
start a daycare business. Check with your bank or credit union to see if this might
be a viable option for you. Even if you find out that a large loan like that is a
bit out of your reach, you might still have other options for financing your new business.
Sometimes large corporations, religious organizations, or labor unions will be
willing to sponsor certain types of businesses. Talk to some of these organizations
in your area about the possibility of a partnership or sponsorship agreement that
would provide you with the finances to get your daycare center started.
Get the Word Out
Once your business is up and running you will need to advertise in order to attract customers. To make your facility more appealing, make sure your daycare center is in a good, convenient location. If you are convenient to a major business area in your city you will probably attract some walk-in traffic from busy parents.
You should definitely budget enough money to pay for an attractive and informative sign for your business. Don't skimp on this. People driving or walking by may decide to contact you about your services because of the attractive way your sign is designed or the information about what you have to offer to parents and children. Don't get too carried away with wording, but make every word count so that you get your message across succinctly.
Passersby may very well be intrigued enough about your daycare to go home and look you up online, so make sure you establish a solid online presence as well. If you are not very skilled at web design, hire someone to design an eye-catching site for you.
You will need to utilize your advertising tools to fill your daycare center initially. Once you have established a good reputation with your customers you should have no problem generating new business simply through word of mouth.
