How to De-Clutter your Home Office
Your home office space needs to be clean and well-organized. It is simply not productive to try to work in an environment that is an unorganized mess. If you want to reorganize your work space for a cleaner, neater working atmosphere, there are some guidelines you can follow that will help you to achieve your goal.
Before you tackle your home office disaster, arm yourself with plenty of garbage bags, storage containers, and cardboard boxes. As you move through the room you can easily decide which items go where, and this will help you to sort through your belongings as you work.
Getting Started
To begin, you might want to consider completely emptying out the room. If you move everything out of the room and start fresh, you are far more likely to realize exactly how much junk you have accumulated (and how much of it you really don't need or want). This will allow you to easily sort through your mass of possessions and decide what needs to be thrown away and what you might want to sell on eBay or donate to charity.
However, if cleaning your entire room sounds like too much to take on at one time, simply choose one area and tackle that first. For example, start with your desk. Clean everything off of it, clean it, and then critically examine everything that you have just piled on the floor. Think about what you really need on (or in) your desk. For the items that you don't need or want there, set them aside and figure out what to do with them.
The most important thing to remember when de-cluttering your home office space is to keep things handy that you use the most. When deciding what to keep on your desk, for example, only choose those items that you need to have within easy reach and/or that you are going to use on a daily basis. If you don't use pens or pencils very often, don't keep a container of them on your desk. It will just take up valuable space and get in your way.
Rethink Your Storage Options
If you find that you have lots of cables cluttering your floor from computers, printers, and other office equipment look for a cable management system that will work for you. There are varieties of different tools available that are designed specifically to keep cables and cords neatly organized and out of the way. A simple online search should provide you with plenty of options, but you might also want to check out some bargain or auction sites to see if you can find anything cheaper. On average, however, cable organizers are not very expensive so you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding something affordable.
If you don't already have bookshelves, consider purchasing some for extra storage space. With bookshelves you can store not only your books, manuals, and magazines you can also store some of your other smaller items that you use on a fairly regular basis.
If you have items that you want to keep but you're not quite sure where to put them, bookshelves are often the perfect solution. For some things, however, you might prefer to purchase storage containers. Storage containers come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and they are also available in different materials. Whether you choose plastic, wood, or decorative baskets, storage containers can be a neat and attractive way to store items out of sight, but within easy reach.
