How to Stay Focused While Working at Home
Working at home can be a wonderful thing. But if it isn't approached properly, it can also turn into a nightmare. This is particularly true for people who have a variety of distractions to keep them from their work.
If you want to work at home, but you're just not sure how to stay focused throughout each day, there are some tips you can follow that will help you to stay on track.
Create Your Office Space
The most important thing you can do to ensure a successful work at home experience is to designate some space in your home as your office. Ideally, you need to have an entire room designated as your office. If a whole room belongs to you, you will have optimal privacy (not to mention peace and quiet) while you're working.
If taking over an entire room of your house simply isn't realistic for you, then do the best you can with what you have. Try choosing a room that isn't heavily used by anyone else in your home and then carve out a comfortable amount of space in that room for your "office".
You will need the following items to get your home office started:
- A desk - make sure you choose one that is going to be large enough for you to work comfortably with
- A good, dependable computer loaded with all of the software systems you will need to use for work
- Good lighting
- Comfortable chair
- Filing Cabinet
- Copier, scanner, fax machine - some, or all, of these items may not be essential for the type of work you will be doing, but it never hurts to have them on hand for when the need arises
Depending on the type of work you do, there are some other basic items you might need such as bookshelves, pencils, notepads, or a phone and answering machine.
Before you start outfitting your home office, sit down and make a list of all the essentials
you can think of that you're going to need. Then set a budget for the most you can afford to spend to
outfit your office. Then go back to your list and start prioritizing, because you probably can't afford
everything that's on your list. That's OK - getting new things for your office can be a reward for landing a new client.
Designate Your Work Hours
This is extremely important if you want to be a success working at home. If you simply get up and wander through your day without any real structure or designated goals to achieve, you will more than likely find yourself wondering where the day went at five or six o'clock that evening.
While you can certainly vary your schedule based on your particular needs, you still need to have some type of daily/weekly schedule to go by in order to get anything accomplished. Without some semblance of a schedule, you will never actually get any real work done.
Make Work Time Separate from Family Time
This particular requirement is one that interferes with many people's attempts to work at home. It is especially difficult for people who have children under the age of 18.
Regardless of whether your kids are in school for most of the day or they are too young to be in school yet, you have to be able to make time for your work if you're going to be successful working from home.
You cannot be productive if you have children or animals running around making noise or interrupting you every other minute. Plus, having screaming or barking in the background will not present a very professional image to your customers or clients that you may be talking to on the phone. Even if you aren't going to have telephone contact with customers or clients, you still need to have some designated quiet time where your family knows not to disturb you.
It is far too easy to become distracted by a million other things while you're trying to work at home, so unless you organize your time and your work space you will probably struggle with trying to make all of it work. Once you have a system in place, however, you may find that working from home is ideal for you.
