The Top 5 Challenges for Work at Home Moms
Working out of your home makes sense in more ways than one. For most mothers, it eliminates the
natural worries connected with handing over your children to strangers.
An at-home job can also
helps save money that would have to be budgeted for work related expenses, and time that would be wasted on a commute can now be spent with family.
With that said, there are several issues that work at home moms (and dads!) have to
come to grips with in order to make their work at home career successful.
1. Learning to 'get to work.'
Home is traditionally the place for relaxation; where you kick back, enjoy yourself and
spend time with your family. When your workspace is in your home, you must train
yourself to get into 'work mode' without the familiar routine of dressing for the
office, grabbing that latte at the corner and driving to work with your radio blaring.
Replace this ritual with one of your own device; dress in comfortable clothes, fix a cup
of coffee and listen to a music CD that gets you motivated before sitting down at your
desk each day. This will help you 'get in the groove' and make settling down to work much easier.
2. Balancing family and work.
One of your main reasons for working at home is probably to have more time with your children.
However, they can be distracting and it may seem that some days you can't get anything done due to a myriad of requests and interruptions.
Try to operate your office in a separate room or a corner somewhat far removed from the main
foot traffic in your household. And, do not be afraid to use a sign on the door or taped
above your desk that says "Mommy at Work" or something similar.
Most importantly, be consistent about refusing to deal with petty matters until you are ready,
and they will quickly learn not to disturb you during working hours. This goes for husbands too!
3. Be aware of burn out.
Yes, burn out is a legitimate concern for anyone working from their homes, as well as driven
business executives working in skyscrapers! All work and no play could be detrimental to you
and your business. Be sure to schedule some personal time for yourself. Sign up for an exercise
class, or take a long walk around the park with a pet to spend some time with nature.
4. Staying organized.
Lowering expenses may be a large part of your decision to remain at home, but investing in
the proper tools you need to run your home based business is money well spent.
A large desk with deep drawers will allow you plenty of workspace and ensure you will have
a place for sticky notes, ink pens and writing pads. A good file cabinet is a must if your
business is not paperless, and a short file cabinet can double as a stand for your printer and/or fax.
5. Generating income to pay the bills.
Your net earnings from your work at home job may initially be significantly less than what
you could bring in from a job outside of the home. However, if you balance such income
against the expenses associated with arranging childcare, maintaining a vehicle and
covering rising gas costs, you will still find the modest income rewarding.
There are challenges associated with any job when it comes to balancing work and family,
but many parents find that not only does working at home relieve stress and financial burdens,
it makes them happier and more productive in the long run. Most obstacles can be overcome
with determination and hard work, and you may find your work at home job can turn into a work at home career.
