10 jobs that real people actually make a living at

6) Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are where you build a website (or start writing a blog) and promote merchant's goods and services via the blog or website. If you generate a sale for the merchant, they'll send you a portion of the sale (anything from 2% to 50%). Affiliate marketing has been pretty hot for the last 5-7 years; its kind of the multi-level marketing of the 2000's. If you can build a website (and there are simple programs available so that anyone can build a website), you can do it, but in all honesty I think its a stretch to expect to pay any serious bills. Unless you work really hard at it, learn a ton about it, and are very smart, this is probably not a viable work at home job. That said, some people make nearly a million a year at affiliate marketing. Check out Rosalind Gardener's book about affiliate marketing for more info.

7) Processing Rebates / Medical Forms

This is a bit like data entry or typing, but there will probably be more steps, which means the work might be a wee bit more challenging, which means there's a possibility you could get paid more. If you ever had a job anywhere near the medical or insurance industries, you'll have a major advantage breaking into forms processing as a work at home job.

8) Proofreading

This is a great work at home job. Check out online freelance sites like Elance and Guru.com. Both list hundreds of proofreading jobs you can do at home. If you've got a sharp eye, are a good speller, and enjoy pointing out other's people's mistakes, you'll be a great proofreader. And after you've gotten a few online jobs, you could setup a little home business and even start looking for local work.

9) Writing Articles

Website owners are desperate for good content. You can provide it to them, working from home. You don't have to be Shakespeare AT ALL, but if you want an edge, you'll need to have better written English skills than your article-writing competitors in Russian and India. However, even a mediocre writer can get $15 per article, and it takes most people one to one and a half hours to write an article. If you happen to have an area of expertise (gardening? raising teenagers?) you can command higher prices by writing articles about things you're an authority on. To get started, google "writing articles for money".

10) Review products / Focus groups / be a mystery shopper

There are hundreds of companies that will gladly pay for your opinion. You can give your opinion through focus groups, reviewing products, pretending to be a real shopper when you're actually a "mystery" shopper, and more. Most of the paid survey sites will also list focus groups as work at home jobs. Mystery shopping is a world onto itself; google "mystery shopping" to get started.
